Every now and then, Marvel demonstrates that it can still do something different. Bernal actually wears a werewolf costume instead of a motion capture suit that gets turned into a textureless digital creation. The coolest thing about it is that it uses more practical special effects than the heavily computerized MCU usually does. It's in black-and-white and tells the story of a group of monster hunters as they gather at Bloodstone Manor to compete with each other for the possession of a mysterious, highly valuable object. The special is a comedy-horror tribute to monster movies of the '30s and '40s. It's about the lesser-known Marvel character Jack Russell, also known as Werewolf by Night because he turns into a werewolf at night, who's played here by Gael García Bernal. Marvel is categorizing this standalone streaming special as a "special presentation," presumably because at 53 minutes it's too short to count as a movie, and it's also just not exactly a movie or a TV show. It's different than most Marvel stuff you've ever seen, and not just because it's in black-and-white. For example, the latest addition to our list of the best shows to watch on Disney+ is Werewolf by Night, an unusually horror-inflected Marvel special (it's a standalone piece that's not long or complex enough to qualify as a movie). Being a family service, Disney+ can't go as hard with Halloween horror content as some of the other streaming platforms, but it gets in on spooky season in its own way.
